Five years of coaching over a hundred teams in a large company have exposed extreme views on the need for process data To persuade teams to use new practices data is needed to compare against the data gathered over the years on established methods. But practitioners and business leaders remain divided into those who want metrics or those who hate them. Who is right? Research minded experts agree data is vital, but how do we convince others? This position paper discusses both sides, examines common mistakes, and then asserts that rather than being a waste, metrics are key to building organizational and industry credibility for the techniques we value
